2009 Riserva

Four years in the making and finally we have decided to release the fourth wine from the Foster e Rocco project that concentrates solely on Sangiovese.

The Riserva came about when Mark Walpole from Greenstone Vineyard offered us one tonne of mixed clone Sangiovese from the rich pre Cambrian soil. As these clones were unique to Heathcote it was an opportunity, which we couldn’t afford to let go. This wine demonstrates to us that Heathcote has the ability to make world class Sangiovese.

2009 Foster e Rocco Riserva – at a glance winemaking

  • De-stemmed grapes were cold soaked for 10 days at 8 degrees
  • Natural ferment occurred and only hand plunged throughout it’s two week fermentation
  • It was drained and pressed into three seasoned French oak barrels (no new oak) where it was left untouched for 18 months in barrel. No racking and no sulphur
  • Wine was unfined, unfiltered and bottled with minimal SO2 added
  • Once in bottle we played the waiting game until this wine truly shone

The response so far has been amazing, and a little overwhelming. But enough of us banging on about our wine. Here’s what some others have to say!

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW from the #201 (Jun 2012)

Pale to medium ruby-garnet colored, the 2009 Riserva Sangiovese is scented of mulberries, warm red currants and kirsch with underlying earth, dried Provencal herbs and tree bark nuances. Medium-bodied, it has a great concentration of expressive red berry preserves and earthy flavors, crisp acid, a medium level of finely grained tannins and a long finish. Drink this one now to 2016+.

Nick Bulleid MW Wine April/May 2013

Foster E Rocco Riserva has a core of sweet, red fruit to match the variety’s typical savoury flavours. I like the developing cedar complexity and overall balance. The wine’s ready and will age further.

Sophie Otton – April/May 2013

Lovely plumpness and balance with interplay of acidity, tannin, and fruit making a long, succulent palate. Aromatic with spice oak but balanced with blueberry and plum flavours. Impressive depth.
